In a recent turn of events, two out of the 27 Rivers State lawmakers who had previously defected to the APC have returned to the PDP, according to Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP. Ologunagba confirmed this development in an interview with Arise TV, stating that the lawmakers recognized the futility of their earlier defection and now view it as a journey of regret and political miscalculation.
Ologunagba emphasized that, in accordance with the provisions of the constitution (section 109, subsection 1g), the seats of those who defected are now considered vacant. This marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Rivers State.
Meanwhile, the federal government responded to allegations made by former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, against President Bola Tinubu regarding the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. Dokubo expressed dissatisfaction with President Tinubu’s handling of the conflict between the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
Addressing the media after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that Dokubo’s allegations are regarded as advisory. Idris clarified that the government has taken note of Dokubo’s concerns but characterized them as advice rather than a conclusive assessment of the situation. The political tension in Rivers State continues to draw attention at both the state and federal levels.
