2023 PowerSolution Conference: Addressing Lingering Power Issues and Empowering the Nation’s Power Sector
In light of the recent Parliamentary Act granting states the authority to generate their own electricity, the upcoming 2023 PowerSolution Conference is set to take place in Lagos from July 19 to 20, 2023. The conference aims to explore solutions to persistent power challenges and drive the growth of the nation’s power sector. The event will be held at Eko Hotels and Suites, bringing together industry experts, stakeholders, and decision-makers to discuss and strategize the way forward.
PowerCap Limited CEO, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, revealed during a discussion with Energy editors in Lagos that the upcoming PowerSolution Conference, themed “Sustainable Resolution of the Gaps in the Power Sector,” will focus on exploring and presenting key solutions to address persistent power challenges.
Ogunleye emphasized that the conference aims to provide support for the energy sector in attaining its power supply objectives. Currently, power capacity in the industry fluctuates between 3000-4000 megawatts, which is insufficient for a country with a population of over 195 million, resulting in limited dispatch of around 4,000 MW.
The primary concern among stakeholders revolves around increasing power capacity in Nigeria’s power sector. The Nigeria Energy Conference seeks to facilitate the realization of the government’s vision by fostering collaboration between international and local stakeholders. This includes manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers of various products ranging from conventional generation methods to renewable energy technologies. The conference agenda also serves as a platform for industry players to network and find viable solutions to the prevailing challenges within the energy sector.
During the discussion, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye highlighted several other crucial issues that will be addressed during the PowerSolution Conference. These topics include:
1. Right Operating Environment: Examining the involvement of state governments and the creation of new markets.
2. Power Generation: Exploring strategies to increase available capacity.
3. Transmission and Distribution: Ensuring the maintenance of network infrastructure for a sustainable grid.
4. Retailing: Addressing challenges in delivering a seamless customer experience while reducing losses.
5. Energy Consumption and Management: Showcasing successful cases of loss reduction implementation.
6. Digitalization: Optimizing Know Your Customer (KYC) projects to achieve sustainable loss reduction and more accurate energy accounting.
7. Feedstock: Overcoming constraints and inhibitors related to gas availability.
8. Financing: Exploring viable financing options for projects in the energy sector.
In addressing energy challenges in Nigeria, Ogunleye emphasized that the conference will specifically focus on the distribution, transmission, and generation companies. Furthermore, there will be a comprehensive analysis of the recent electricity act and discussions on the most effective approaches to implement it.
Ogunleye expressed that the main challenge lies in the determination of all stakeholders to create an enabling environment that fosters investor confidence and attracts investment into the sector. The Nigerian market holds significant potential, and many investors are keen on participating in it. Building this confidence and addressing the concerns of investors are crucial steps towards addressing the energy challenges in the country.
He affirmed that the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to be the Special Guest and Keynote Speaker while other notable personalities and experts in the power sectors will make presentations on various issues.
According to Mr Ogunleye, the two day event, unlike others, will focus strictly on electricity, power and other issues impairing achievements in the sector.
“It will also bring participants together and become a platform for cross fertilisation of ideas, sharing and learning to ensure that Nigeria is able to improve its energy access and duration of stable power supply to meet the needs of homes, industries and other users”, he said.
The powerSolution Conference started as far back as early 2000, with some held within and outside the country.
