A faction within the Labour party in Imo State took to the streets on Tuesday, staging a protest against the presence of presidential candidate Peter Obi in the state. The demonstration unfolded at the prominent Imo State University (IMSU) junction, where participants wielded placards and banners to express their discontent. The occasion of Peter Obi’s visit coincided with the launch of the party’s campaign for their gubernatorial candidate, Athan Achonu.
This particular faction, which opposes Athan Achonu’s candidacy, seized the opportunity to voice their concerns, targeting Peter Obi’s perceived involvement. Holding banners emblazoned with messages such as “Peter Obi Enough is Enough,” “Peter Obi, stop deceiving Ndi Igbo,” “Athan Achonu is not a member of the Labour party,” and “Peter Obi, stop playing mischief,” the protesters sought to make their stance clear.
However, during the official campaign kick-off event for the Imo election’s candidate, Senator Athan Achonu, at the Kanu Nwankwo Stadium in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, the party aimed to address the controversy. Speaking at the rally, Peter Obi, the party’s former presidential candidate, emphasized that the Labour party is committed to adhering to due process. He clarified that the selection process that led to Athan Achonu’s candidacy was authentic and legitimate.
The demonstration and subsequent clarification underscore the complex dynamics and internal divisions present within the Labour party in Imo State, as well as the broader political landscape of the region.
