A devastating Russian artillery strike in the heart of Kherson, Ukraine, on October 1, 2024, has left seven civilians dead, according to the regional prosecutor’s office. The attack occurred around 9 AM local time (0600 GMT) and targeted a bustling area near a local market and public transport stop, causing widespread destruction.
Footage shared by the region’s governor displayed the aftermath, with debris, broken glass, and several bodies visible on the pavement. Among the deceased are three women and four men, highlighting the tragic impact on everyday civilians in the area.
Kherson city, situated on the western bank of the Dnipro River, has become a focal point in the ongoing conflict. Although Russian forces retreated from the city in November 2022, moving to the opposite bank of the Dnipro, they have continued to conduct intense shelling, causing ongoing fear and uncertainty for the residents.
The recent strike is a grim reminder of the ongoing violence and instability in Ukraine, as the country continues to endure the consequences of the Russian invasion. The incident underscores the persistent dangers faced by civilians in conflict zones, raising urgent calls for international attention and action to address the humanitarian crisis.
