On Wednesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio paid a visit to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), at his residence in Asokoro, Abuja. Although the specifics of their discussions were not disclosed at the time of reporting, the meeting has drawn significant attention given the political tension surrounding the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State.
In a related development, PDP governors have reiterated their support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the legitimate leader of the party in the state. This follows a heated warning from Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, who threatened repercussions if any PDP governor interfered in the state’s political affairs. Wike had cautioned them to stay out of Rivers politics, going as far as to threaten to stir unrest in their respective states if they ignored his warning.
Despite Wike’s strong remarks, Governor Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, reaffirmed the forum’s backing of Fubara during a meeting with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). He stated that stakeholders within the party were working behind the scenes to reconcile Fubara and Wike. Mohammed emphasized that, as the elected governor, Fubara must maintain control over the PDP structure in Rivers State.
The party’s leadership also expressed support for the decision of the PDP Governors’ Forum, underscoring that Fubara should be recognized as the party’s leader in Rivers State.
