Grammy-nominated afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, has voiced his support for the legalization of marijuana in Nigeria. In a recent Instagram live session with fans, Kuti argued that there is no scientific evidence linking marijuana use to any disease. He pointed out that many countries, including Israel, have legalized marijuana for various purposes, including medical research.
Kuti lamented the loss of Nigeria’s unique strain of marijuana due to the ban on its cultivation in the country. He emphasized that Africa used to produce the best marijuana in the world, particularly in regions like Obiarukwu forest in Asaba and Sapele in the Delta region. However, he claimed that lack of encouragement for cultivation led to the decline of Nigeria’s marijuana industry.
The singer also highlighted that several Western countries, such as Germany, France, Britain, America, and Canada, are considering or have already legalized marijuana. He questioned whether the Nigerian government has independently conducted any research on marijuana use and advocated for a more informed approach to its legalization.
