The Kogi State Government has launched an investigation following the deaths of six individuals who consumed potentially contaminated cassava flour. The incident occurred last Wednesday in Anyoke, Okunchi Ward, Adavi Local Government Area.
Eight victims were initially taken to three hospitals, where six succumbed to multiple organ failure. The two survivors have since been discharged. State Commissioner for Health AbdulAzzez Adeiza confirmed that a specialized team, including officials from the World Health Organization and local health experts, has been dispatched to investigate the outbreak.
Samples of the cassava flour are being analyzed for toxins in collaboration with the state Ministry of Agriculture. The government has covered the medical expenses for the victims and will make the final toxicology report public.
Adeiza acknowledged the dedication of healthcare workers in saving the two surviving victims and emphasized the importance of a comprehensive investigation. This includes consultations with community leaders, environmental assessments, and evaluation of local water sources.
The Ministry of Health also commended the community’s cooperation and advised residents to maintain healthy practices, remain vigilant, and report any concerning developments promptly. No further cases of gastrointestinal symptoms have been reported in the area.
