Spain’s 2023 Women’s World Cup Hero, Olga Carmona, Mourns Father’s Passing
Olga Carmona, the scorer of Spain’s winning goal at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final, has suffered the loss of her father. Spain secured their inaugural Women’s World Cup title by defeating England in an exhilarating final.
Carmona’s pivotal 29th-minute strike secured Spain’s victory in the thrilling match. Despite England’s efforts to make a comeback, Spain held their ground.
Tragically, after the intense game and jubilant celebrations, Carmona received news of her father’s passing.
Carmona had participated in the post-match celebrations, including dancing on the field with her teammates and joining the trophy presentation. However, shortly after the game, the Football Federation released a statement confirming the sad news.
The official statement from the federation’s social media account reads: “The RFEF deeply regrets to communicate the passing of Olga Carmona’s father. The footballer learned this sad news after the conclusion of the World Cup final. We send our most heartfelt condolences to Olga and her family in this time of profound sorrow. We love you, Olga. You are a part of Spanish football history.”
Earlier in the World Cup victory celebration, Carmona had displayed a shirt with the word “Merchi” written on it. This gesture was a tribute to her best friend’s late mother, who had recently passed away.
Carmona explained her post-goal celebration to Spanish broadcasters, saying: “First of all, I want to say that this victory, this achievement, goes to the mother of one of my best friends who has recently passed away. I celebrated the goal with her shirt and from here, I dedicate this to the whole family with all my love.”
At that time, Carmona was unaware of her father’s passing.
