Sevilla winger Chidera Ejuke has shared the harrowing experience he and his Super Eagles teammates faced during their distressing ordeal at Al Abaq Airport in Libya earlier this week. The players and officials were held hostage at the airport for several hours, enduring a lack of basic necessities such as food and water.
This unsettling situation ultimately forced the team to withdraw from their scheduled 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against the Mediterranean Knights. In an interview with *Dario de Sevilla*, Ejuke expressed the shock and confusion they experienced during the incident. “It was a crazy situation that we did not expect. At one point, we realized we couldn’t do anything; we were effectively locked inside the airport,” he revealed.
The ordeal lasted over 16 hours, which felt exceptionally prolonged under the circumstances. Although the players managed to bring a limited supply of water and a few snacks from their flight, those provisions quickly ran out. “Yes, it was a long time,” Ejuke explained. “Without food, we were really struggling. We brought some water when we came from Nigeria, but that wasn’t nearly enough to sustain us for so long.”
Amid the tension, the players shared a sense of solidarity, helping each other cope with the fear and uncertainty. “We were a little scared, but we all stood together so that we wouldn’t go crazy,” Ejuke noted.
Now that all the Super Eagles players have returned to their respective clubs, their fans are anxiously awaiting the verdict from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which is currently investigating the circumstances that led to the postponement of the qualifiers.
