Festus Akande, the Public Relations Officer for the Court of Appeal, has reassured that the recent fire outbreak at the Supreme Court of Nigeria in Abuja will not affect the ongoing presidential election petition.
The fire incident, which occurred on Monday, damaged parts of the Supreme Court building, including some justices’ offices. Concerns arose that it might impact the pending suit filed by Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar regarding the 2023 election.
However, Akande clarified in an interview on Arise TV that the fire outbreak was unrelated to the ongoing petition. He explained that the incident was caused by an electrical fault in a chamber containing computers, equipment, and a functional library used by the justices.
Akande emphasized that the incident would not affect the court proceedings, as the damage was limited to replaceable books and computer equipment. He stressed that such electrical faults can occur anywhere and are unrelated to the court’s activities.
