In a recent landmark decision, the Supreme Court has dismissed Atiku Abubakar’s appeal challenging the 2023 presidential election results, emphasizing the need for a gracious concession.*
Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the February 25th election, had argued that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted forged documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He sought the court’s permission to present evidence obtained from Tinubu’s records at Chicago State University.
However, President Tinubu countered this plea, asserting that Atiku’s request was made beyond the stipulated 180-day period for such claims.
The seven-man panel, presided over by Justice Inyang Okoro, issued its verdict on Thursday, deeming Atiku’s appeal lacking in merit and subsequently dismissed it.
Following the court’s ruling, a statement from the presidential office has urged Atiku to demonstrate statesmanship by extending his congratulations to President Tinubu for his victory in the 2023 election. The statement highlights the court’s determination that President Tinubu secured the majority of lawful votes and was duly elected as Nigeria’s President and Commander-in-Chief.
The call for a congratulatory gesture underscores the importance of a peaceful transition of power and unity in the nation’s political landscape.
