Switzerland has reopened its embassy in Baghdad after 33 years, marking the end of a closure that began during the 1991 Gulf War. Unlike other European nations that resumed their diplomatic missions in Iraq years ago, Switzerland had kept its embassy closed until now.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry cited the improved security situation in Iraq as a key reason for reestablishing its presence in the country. The ministry’s statement also emphasized Iraq’s growing role as a mediator and bridge-builder in the Middle East, noting that the reopening of the embassy aims to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.
“In recent years, Iraq has repeatedly campaigned for peace and security in the region,” the statement said, adding that Iraq’s energy resources and ongoing economic diversification present significant long-term export and investment opportunities for Swiss companies.
