A viral video features a young girl, known as #_prettyy_.yorubagirl_ on TikTok, who faced criticism from her parents for requesting an iPhone as a birthday gift. In the video, the girl is seen in a car, while her father reprimands her for prioritizing an iPhone over her studies.
The father suggests that she should resort to inappropriate means to acquire the iPhone, insinuating that girls with such phones are morally corrupt. He contrasts her desire for an iPhone with others pursuing medical education who prioritize their studies over material possessions. He expresses concern about her future and laments her decision to cause them pain.
The video sparked a range of reactions, with some criticizing the parents for not complying with their daughter’s wishes and others chastising the girl for recording her parents while they scolded her.
Tacha, a popular media personality, expressed surprise at those condemning the girl’s parents and defending her. She suggested that the girl knew what she was doing by recording the conversation and believed that some individuals would still buy her the iPhone.
In a follow-up post, Tacha criticized contemporary youths for trying to appear overly woke and soft. She argued that the morals and values of Africans differ from those of foreigners. Tacha defended the girl’s parents, suggesting that they must be enduring difficulties from her behavior, given her decision to record and share the clip.
Tacha emphasized that the girl’s obsession with getting an iPhone instead of focusing on her education was concerning. She urged people to understand the morals and values within Nigerian and African households, which may differ from those in other cultures.
Tacha concluded by stating that she was not implying that buying the girl an iPhone would affect her morals but believed that the parents likely had valid reasons for their decision. She encouraged people to consider the full story and the cultural context before passing judgment.
