This phenomenon largely helps to shed light on the reports of missing genitalia in various regions like Lokoja, Ilorin, Abuja, and others. Here’s a concise explanation of the medical condition known as ‘Koro’:
Koro is a psychological condition where an individual believes that their genitals are shrinking or disappearing. This conviction can lead to severe anxiety and even depression in the affected person.
Koro is often culturally bound, meaning it is more prevalent in certain cultural or social groups, particularly those who are susceptible to believing in sexual-related myths.
In men, this condition may manifest as a belief that their penis is shrinking or vanishing, while women may perceive their breasts as disappearing.
When we observe the news reports of missing vaginas and penises, they often originate from regions and cultures where this belief is prevalent. People from these areas may sometimes attribute these occurrences to individuals, who, under the influence of cultural beliefs, accept responsibility for them.
