On Monday, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, held a reception for Nigeria’s D’Tigress at the State House, Abuja. Tinubu praised the team’s impressive performance in basketball, attributing it to hard work, discipline, and a commitment to excellence. She also highlighted the inspiration the team provides for many, especially women, to chase their dreams.
Tinubu expressed, “Your triumph goes beyond sports, it embodies the potential achieved when a diverse group collaborates towards a shared objective. I am incredibly proud of your accomplishments and the positive representation you’ve made for our nation. Your success reinforces the notion that Nigerian women can reach the pinnacle in any field they decide to engage in.”
At the event, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, expressed gratitude to the First Lady for the reception and assured that preparations were underway for the 2024 Olympic Games with a winning mindset.
The team captain presented the esteemed FIBA Women’s Afrobasket trophy to the First Lady, accompanied by the wife of the Vice President and the wife of the President of the Senate. Busola Kukoyi, Senator Tinubu’s Media Advisor, stated in a release that Basketball Federation officials also gifted a medal and jersey to the First Lady.
This marks the D’tigress of Nigeria’s fourth consecutive victory at the Afrobasket tournament.
