Supporters of President Bola Tinubu, operating under the banner of “Niger Delta for Tinubu,” made a spirited entrance at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) in Abuja, just ahead of the much-anticipated judgment.
Clad in distinct black and red attire emblazoned with pro-Tinubu slogans, these ardent supporters gathered at the Court of Appeal premises as early as 7 a.m. on Wednesday, bringing with them placards, lively chants, and jubilant dancing.
Among the slogans displayed on their placards were declarations such as “Niger Deltans unite behind BAT’s mandate, endorsed by over 200 million Nigerians,” “President Tinubu’s commitment to Niger Delta,” and “Gratitude to Tinubu for reviving the Niger Delta Ministry.”
Notably, the majority of these enthusiastic backers, primarily young people, were led to the tribunal by Asari Dokubo, a former militant and a staunch ally of President Tinubu.
This event unfolds on the day of the much-anticipated verdict by the tribunal concerning the 2023 presidential election, slated for Wednesday, September 6, 2023. It should be remembered that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had officially declared Bola Tinubu, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the victor of the election that took place on February 25.
However, the election result faced legal challenges from Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, who ran as presidential candidates for the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), respectively. In addition, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) also contested Tinubu’s victory.
Earlier in the week, the Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Umar Bangari, confirmed in an official statement that the tribunal would deliver its judgment on the 2023 presidential election outcome today, Wednesday. The statement further clarified that while all judgments would be broadcast live, access to the court premises would be strictly regulated, allowing only accredited individuals, legal representatives, and political party delegates entry into the courtroom.
