Two employees of a KFC eatery in Festac Town, Lagos, have been arrested following the death of their 20-year-old colleague last Friday.
Relatives and friends of the deceased, Anita Chiwendu, staged a protest at the eatery demanding her body, five days after her reported death.
According to the restaurant’s management, Anita collapsed while hanging her clothes on the line. The incident occurred two months after she was hired.
Her family and loved ones are seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding her death and are insisting on seeing her corpse before accepting any explanation.
During the protest, a family member revealed that the company initially notified the police, adding that Anita’s mother was informed at the police station about the tragedy. However, when the family requested to see the body, they were given conflicting information about its location.
The family member said, “This back and forth is raising suspicion, suggesting that the family has not been told the exact cause of their healthy daughter’s death.”
Efforts to obtain a statement from the eatery’s management were unsuccessful, but an anonymous staff member stated that management was refraining from commenting at this time due to the sensitive nature of the situation. The staff member mentioned that Anita screamed and collapsed while hanging her clothes and was rushed to two hospitals before being pronounced dead at the second one.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hudenyi, confirmed that two staff members of the eatery have been arrested. He stated that the case was initially reported at the Festac Division and has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yaba. An investigation team visited KFC to review the CCTV footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
