The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (Unical), Prof. Florence Obi, has issued a directive for the complete evacuation of the institution’s main library. This action comes in response to an explosion that occurred in the Special Education wing of the library building on Monday, July 4, resulting in significant cracks.
A statement issued by the University’s Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe, confirmed that the Vice Chancellor has instructed all staff and students to stay away from the affected building. Additionally, the Chief Security Officer and the University Librarian have been tasked with ensuring the swift evacuation of personnel and university property from the premises.
The Chief Security Officer is further instructed to seal off the building and take necessary measures to safeguard any remaining university assets. It is worth noting that the university’s management had previously declared a state of emergency regarding the deteriorating condition of the left wing of the library.
This incident highlights the university’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its staff, students, and valuable assets. Efforts will be made to assess and address the damage caused by the explosion in a timely manner.
