Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York to represent Nigeria at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). His arrival was confirmed by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), in a statement on Monday.
Shettima touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport in the early hours of Monday and was greeted by a delegation including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, and Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. Other officials present were Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigerian diplomats, and United Nations officials.
As directed by President Bola Tinubu, Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to this year’s UNGA. He is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in various high-level meetings throughout the session.
The 79th UNGA is a critical platform for accelerating global progress towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During this session, key discussions will focus on global cooperation to address pressing challenges such as climate change, poverty, inequality, ongoing conflicts, and global health crises.
A major event during UNGA, the **Summit of the Future**, aims to strengthen international collaboration to tackle these issues and reaffirm commitments to the SDGs. Heads of State and Government will gather on September 22-23 to deliberate on gaps in global governance and to reaffirm support for the UN Charter.
The summit is expected to result in a “Pact for the Future,” a document aimed at fostering greater cooperation and adapting global systems to contemporary challenges. Additionally, the **Summit of the Future Action Days** on September 20-21 will facilitate engagement with key stakeholders to support this goal.
The UN’s Department of Global Communications will also host the **SDG Media Zone** from September 23-27, offering interviews and discussions on critical global issues impacting people worldwide.
