The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to non-performing contractors engaged in projects within the FCT, threatening to terminate their contracts.
Wike made this statement during an inspection of the ongoing construction of the 15-kilometer left-wing service lane of the Outer Southern Expressway, which runs from Ring Road 1 to Wasa. He expressed disappointment in the performance of CGC Nigeria Ltd, the contractor for the project, stating that their work completion is barely at 50% despite claims of 75%.
“Last year, you promised to finish the project by December 2024 or January 2025, but now you’ve extended it to May. With what I see, it may not be completed for another eight or nine months,” Wike said, emphasizing the need for contractors to honor their commitments.
The minister pointed out that the FCT Administration had paid over 80% of the contract sum, yet he found the work unsatisfactory. “This is unacceptable. We are not encouraged by the progress. We have paid more than 80% of this contract, and the job is not even 50% done. I will not accept this,” he added.
Wike reiterated the administration’s zero-tolerance policy for non-performance: “If you don’t perform, we will kick you out. There are no sentiments involved; whether you are a local or foreign contractor, our focus is solely on the work.”
He further emphasized that failing contractors would face sanctions and be required to repay the funds collected without delivering on their commitments.
Wike’s frustration stemmed from his recent inspection of the Apo to Karshi road, where he noted a lack of equipment on-site. He expressed dissatisfaction with CGC, despite the company being recognized as one of the most respected construction firms in Nigeria.
To address the situation, Wike directed the Director of Engineering Services at the Federal Capital Development Authority to meet with the contractor to establish a detailed work plan and completion timeline. He underscored the road’s significance, as its completion would alleviate traffic congestion in the area, highlighting its importance for local economic activities.
