Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has praised the Federal College of Education Technical (FCET) Gusau for its critical role in nurturing and producing qualified teachers for the state’s public schools. This commendation came during a courtesy visit by the FCET Governing Council to the Government House.
Governor Lawal highlighted the significant contributions of FCET Gusau to the state’s education system, noting that five of his sisters are graduates of the institution. He acknowledged the college’s pivotal role in improving educational standards, particularly given Zamfara’s historical struggles with educational outcomes.
Lawal reflected on the state of education in Zamfara, describing it as having consistently ranked at the bottom nationally, often competing with Yobe State for the lowest position. He pointed out that the previous administration’s failure to pay fees for NECO and WAEC examinations had exacerbated these challenges. However, he noted that his administration has resolved these issues and has made strides in improving educational performance, citing Zamfara’s recent achievement as the top-performing state in the North and second-best nationally in the NECO entrance examination for gifted students.
The governor outlined ongoing efforts to enhance education in the state, including the renovation and construction of over 290 schools, provision of suitable furniture, and continuous teacher training. He emphasized the FCET’s essential role in these efforts, stating that the state government is committed to working closely with the college to improve the quality of education.
Prof. Muhammad Nuhu, Chairman of the FCET Governing Council, commended Governor Lawal for making education a priority. He praised the governor’s initiatives and also acknowledged the support of the First Lady, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda, who sponsored 20 students at the college and awarded computers to the top three graduates.
Prof. Nuhu also noted the historical significance of FCET Gusau, highlighting that it was established to address educational disparities in one of the most disadvantaged states. He expressed appreciation for the governor’s proactive measures to address educational challenges and improve the sector.
