Under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government conducted a trial run of the newly installed electronic gates (e-gates) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Friday. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, oversaw the testing of the e-gates, indicating that the project is nearing completion with a success rate of 99%.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo announced plans to commence full operation of the e-gates by next week, marking a significant step towards enhancing airport efficiency and security. Joined by Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, and Kemi Nanna Nandap, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, among other government officials, Tunji-Ojo emphasized the e-gates’ role in streamlining passenger movements and reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
The deployment of 29 e-gates in Lagos, with additional installations in Enugu, Kano, and Port-Harcourt, underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing airport infrastructure nationwide. Tunji-Ojo highlighted the effectiveness of the e-gates in screening passengers, noting the rejection of fake and expired passports while swiftly clearing genuine ones.
“With this robust infrastructure in place, we bolster Nigeria’s airport security, ensuring that unauthorized individuals cannot enter the country undetected,” Tunji-Ojo stated. He credited the initiative to President Tinubu’s vision for a more efficient and secure aviation sector, commending the collaborative efforts of various government agencies and stakeholders, including the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigeria Customs Service.
The Minister expressed gratitude to Hon. Festus Keyamo (SAN), the Minister of Aviation, and other key figures whose contributions have facilitated the successful implementation of the e-gate system, echoing President Tinubu’s call to transform the narrative and facilitate seamless passenger movements across Nigeria’s borders.
