- Sheikh Goni Gashua, an Islamic cleric in Yobe State who was travelling from Kano State offered to give John Gabriel who pretended to be stranded on the road a lift.
- According to police investigation, Gabriel killed the Cleric in Jaji-Maji, a village along Gashua town.
- The two dismissed soldiers were reduced from Lance Corporal to private soldiers before their dismissal from the Nigeria Army according to Ibrahim Osabo, Ag Commanding Officer of the Battalion, Nguru, Yobe.
It was reported that the Islamic cleric, who was traveling from Kano State, was said to have given Gabriel a lift.
On getting to Jaji-Maji, a village along Gashua town, Gabriel was said to have told the deceased that there was an unusual noise at the rear tyre.
The cleric stopped to check the tyres when Gabriel was said to have allegedly brought out his rifle concealed in a camp bed and shot the cleric dead and called Gideon on phone to assist him to tow the vehicle.
Ibrahim Osabo, Ag Commanding Officer of the Battalion, Nguru, Yobe, who disclosed the dismissal of 2 soldiers to newsmen said the suspects were reduced from Lance Corporal to private soldiers before they were dismissed.
Osabo said, “You are all aware of what happened a week ago where the two service personnel of this unit went out and committed atrocity and the Nigerian Police personnel arrested them.
