Following protests at the 2024 policy meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Examination (JAMB), Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman has announced the enforcement of a minimum admission age of 18 for tertiary institutions starting in 2025.
Stakeholders vehemently opposed the initial ban on underage admissions, leading to a contentious session disrupted by uproar and resistance. Despite the outcry, Prof. Mamman pressed on, justifying the new age benchmark as essential for the integrity of the education system.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, intervened to restore order and proposed a phased approach to implementation. He emphasized the educational policy’s provisions for nine years of basic education and three years of senior secondary education before tertiary admission, highlighting concerns about underage candidates impacting university standards.
In response, JAMB has been instructed to enforce the 18-year age requirement for subsequent admissions, aiming to uphold educational standards and eligibility criteria across Nigerian universities.
