Zita Ihedoro, the secretary general of Sisters of Jesus, the Saviour Generalate, who identified the victims as Johannes Nwodo, Christabel Echemazu, Liberata Mbamalu and Benita Agu, in a statement Yesterday said the four catholic nuns were abducted while travelling from Rivers state to Imo for a thanksgiving mass on Sunday.
The statement read: “Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, it is with great pain that we bring to your notice the kidnapping of four of our sisters mentioned above.
“The sad event occurred around Okigwe-Umulolo axis this morning (Sunday) shortly after the sisters were on their way to the thanksgiving mass of our sister.
“We implore for an intense prayer for their quick and safe release. May Jesus the Saviour listen to our prayers and may Our Mother Mary intercede for the unconditional release of our dear sisters.
Imo state police spokesman, Michael Abattam when contacted, could not immediately ascertain the motives behind the abduction as no group has claimed responsibility.
“Four reverend sisters of the Catholic church were abducted, we are on the trail of the kidnappers with a view to freeing the victims,” He said
Kidnappings by criminal gangs are frequent in Africa’s most populous country, but in recent weeks members of Christian churches have increasingly been targeted. Most hostages are released after a ransom payment while some have been killed.
