The **Lagos State Government** has announced an **eight-hour road closure** and **traffic diversion** to facilitate the smooth running of the **Access Bank Lagos City Marathon** scheduled for **Saturday, February 15, 2025**. The marathon, a flagship event attracting local and international athletes, will run from **5:00 am to 1:00 pm**, causing significant adjustments to the city’s traffic flow.
The announcement was made by the **State Commissioner for Transportation**, **Oluwaseun Osiyemi**, on Tuesday. Osiyemi emphasized the importance of the measures to ensure the safety of participants and spectators alike.
### **Marathon Route and Affected Roads**
The marathon will kick off at the **National Stadium** in **Surulere** and proceed through key parts of Lagos, affecting several major roads and bridges. The detailed route includes:
– **Ikorodu Road** towards **Anthony (Bertola)**
– **Gbagada** to the **Third Mainland Bridge**
– Inbound **Lagos Island** via **Dolphin Road**
– **Alfred Rewane Road**, **Falomo Roundabout**, and **Bourdillon Road**
– Crossing the **Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge** to **Admiralty Way**
– **Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue**, **Akin Adesola**, and **Ahmadu Bello Way**, concluding at **Eko Atlantic**
To secure the race corridor, adjoining roads, junctions, and intersections will be blocked using **concrete barriers**. Traffic control will be managed by officials from various agencies, including **LASTMA**, **Nigerian Police Force (NPF)**, **FRSC**, **LSNC**, and **LAWMA**, who will be stationed at strategic points.
### **Alternative Routes for Commuters**
To mitigate the impact of the closures on commuters, the government has provided alternative routes to ensure smooth traffic flow during the event:
– **From Ikeja:** Use **Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue**, connect to **Eko Bridge**, and proceed via **Outer Marina**.
– **From Badagry/Mile 2:** Pass through **Apapa** via **Orile**, link **Eko Bridge**, and continue through **Outer Marina**.
Commissioner Osiyemi urged residents to plan their movements ahead of time to avoid delays and inconvenience. He also encouraged the public to support the event, which continues to position Lagos as a hub for international sports tourism.
