The Permanent secretary made this vow on Friday, 9 September, while addressing the press in commemoration of the 2022 edition of the international day celebration to protect education from attack in Abuja
Mr Adejoh in his opening remarks stated that the 2022 edition of the “International Day to Protect Education from Attack was initiated by the unanimous decision of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2020 to create and sustain awareness on the importance of holistic safeguarding of schools in all nations of the world.
However, the theme “Implementing the School Safety Policy as A Tool to Protect Education from Attack: Our Collective Responsibility” was chosen by the Ministry in collaboration with other implementing partners to draw national attention on the Policy guidance to ensure that schools in Nigeria remain safe for all learners, education personnel and administrators.
Adejoh reviewed that as Nigerians, we are all aware of incessant kidnappings, abductions and destruction of Education infrastructures that led to massive increase in the number of out of school children regardless of all the efforts by the Ministry to reduce the number therein. Students that were abducted, kidnapped and released undergo emotional trauma that may lead to abandoning education and life-long learning.
The Permanent secretary posited that in line with this celebration, Nigerians are going to witness the implication of insecurity from the debate by young children, poetry recitation and drama. The Perm. Sec. also stated that some resource persons will also use this opportunity to explore the significance of the documents that guide the protection of our schools
Adejoh maintains that it is also worthy of note that the National Policy on Safety, Security and Violence- Free schools, the implementation guidelines and the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools are the copious guidance developed by the Ministry to ensure that the safety of the school, learners and the school community is a collective endeavor.
Adejoh reiterates the fact that to mark this day, the ministry also held a Webinar to enable experts deliberate on milestones, challenges and the way forward for the implementation of the Policy.
