In a significant political shift, 702 members from the Labour Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), People’s Redemption Party (PRP), and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Makera Constituency, Kaduna-South Local Government Area, have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This move is aimed at bolstering the APC’s efforts in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 19.
The defectors, including a former State House of Assembly candidate for Makera Constituency, as well as prominent women and youth leaders, were officially welcomed by Ibrahim Soso, the Local Government Party Chairman, and Senator Lawal Aliyu, a former Senator representing Kaduna-North. The event took place at Monday Market in Kakuri Gwari.
In his address, Soso extended a warm welcome to the new members, promising them equal opportunities within the APC. He urged them to support and vote for all APC candidates in the forthcoming local government elections. Soso expressed confidence in the party’s prospects, stating, “We’re convinced that Kaduna-South will vote for our party, the APC, and we’re confident that the main opposition PDP is dead here.”
Ayok Danboyi, a former candidate for the Makera State House of Assembly, and Yunana Bala, a PDP chieftain, spoke on behalf of the defectors. They cited dissatisfaction with the leadership styles of the Executive Vice Chairman of the Local Government, Nehemiah Baba-Karik, and Governor Uba Sani as key reasons for their departure. They praised the current leadership for their focus on uniting the people of the state and suggested that the dwindling membership of their former parties in Kaduna-South indicated a likely decline of the PDP in the region.
The defectors committed to working diligently in preparation for the local government elections on October 19, 2024. Nehemiah Baba-Karik, the Executive Vice Chairman of Kaduna-South Local Government Area, endorsed their decision, calling it a “wise decision” and assured them that they would be fully integrated into the APC’s plans. He highlighted the governor’s effective leadership in promoting good governance.
The local political landscape in Kaduna is thus witnessing a notable realignment as the APC seeks to strengthen its position ahead of the local government elections.
