Uche Nwosu, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former chief of staff to ex-Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, has appealed to Nigerians to postpone the planned nationwide protest and give President Bola Tinubu time to address the country’s issues.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, Nwosu argued that expecting quick fixes from a government that has been in power for only a year is unrealistic given the long-standing challenges facing the nation. His appeal comes shortly after the APC urged parents to monitor their children to prevent them from being drawn into violence associated with the protest.
Scheduled from August 1 to 10, the protest has generated significant tension and diverse reactions across the country, driven by increasing living costs and economic hardships. However, Nwosu urged Nigerians to remain patient, emphasizing that President Tinubu needs time to implement necessary reforms.
“We are indeed passing through hard times in our dear nation,” Nwosu said. “But we cannot give up hope. While it is true that citizens have the right to protest in a democracy, past protests in Nigeria, such as the EndSARS protest, were marred by violence and loss.
“President Tinubu’s policies may seem harsh now, but every tunnel has a light at the end. He has been in office for just a year. Let’s allow him the time to address the abnormalities of the past so that we can build a nation that meets our collective hopes and aspirations. Nigeria is our home, and we should strive for a country where we can all proudly say this is our own.”
