In a heated exchange, Abdullahi Abbas, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, responded to criticism from Hashimu Dungurawa, Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). Dungurawa had accused President Bola Tinubu of failing to address the ongoing Kano Emirate crisis, suggesting that Tinubu’s inaction could jeopardize his chances in the 2027 presidential election.
Dungurawa urged President Tinubu to intervene and ensure the banishment of the deposed Emir, Ado Bayero, from Kano, stating that the crisis was tarnishing the President’s reputation. This call to action was made during a press briefing at his Lugard House office on Sunday.
In a swift rebuttal on Monday, Abbas claimed that the APC in Kano is more united and popular than ever, asserting that the party would secure three times the votes it received in the last presidential election. He criticized Governor Abba Yusuf and NNPP leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for their governance approach, predicting their defeat in the upcoming 2027 election.
Abbas accused Governor Yusuf of using the emirate dispute as a distraction from his governance failures. He contrasted Yusuf’s administration with other state governors who are celebrating their first year in office by commissioning projects. According to Abbas, the NNPP’s leadership in Kano has been marked by poor performance and anti-people policies, which will influence voter decisions in the next election.
“The crisis of confidence rocking the factionalised opposition NNPP and its embattled leader, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, is embarrassingly exposing its dismal failure, even as it is boasting of clinching the nation’s presidency come 2027,” Abbas stated. He assured President Tinubu and the APC national leadership that the Kano State APC is attracting more politically valuable individuals and is prepared to deliver significantly more votes in the next election.
Abbas concluded by emphasizing the public’s awareness of Governor Yusuf’s focus on the contentious emirate law as a tactic to divert attention from his administration’s shortcomings, contrasting it with the project commissioning efforts seen in other states.
