Amadein Tibiebi, the Assistant Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, has been detained by officers from Zone 16 of the Nigerian Police for suspected illegal possession of firearms. Tibiebi, a former militant, is currently under interrogation at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Bayelsa State Police Command due to the absence of a detention facility at Zone 16.
Tibiebi’s arrest on Monday is linked to an incident from November 2021, when Richard Okon was arrested for allegedly carrying illegal firearms during a wake-keep in the Koluama community within the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Okon confessed in a recorded statement that the firearm he possessed belonged to Tibiebi, for whom he was working. However, no further action was taken on that matter at the time.
A police insider revealed that Tibiebi had previously been invited for questioning but was released after presenting forged documents and falsified licenses, leveraging his influential connections.
His latest arrest follows a new petition alleging that Tibiebi has been making threats to individuals. Despite the previous incident, Tibiebi reportedly continued to flaunt his connections, which he claimed exempted him from legal repercussions.
Another source from Zone 16 indicated that Tibiebi attempted to avoid detention by contacting senior officials, including senators and top law enforcement officers.
Tibiebi is also known as the nephew and chief security officer to Cleopas Moses, a former PDP state chairman and Bayelsa Central Senatorial District representative in the Ninth Senate. Locals have reported that Tibiebi often boasted about his perceived immunity from legal action due to his affiliations within the PDP and the state government.
Zone 16 Public Relations Officer, Emonena Gunn, confirmed Tibiebi’s arrest and stated that the investigation is ongoing.
