Midoil Refining and Petrochemicals Company Limited has initiated construction activities for its refinery in Lagos with a ceremonial turning of the sod at Shekungba, Ikosi/Ejinrin Local Council Development Area.
The event, led by Executive Chairman Mrs. Elizabeth-Omolara Akintonde, marks a significant step towards transforming the local communities by generating both direct and indirect jobs. Akintonde, celebrating her 74th birthday, highlighted the refinery’s potential to boost Nigeria’s energy sector with a capacity of 100,000 barrels per day.
Despite over a decade of delays, the project has finally commenced, bringing hope for significant local and national development. Akintonde and other dignitaries, including retired Justice Olusola Hunponu-Wusu and Hajia Amina Abdullahi, emphasized the refinery’s importance in reducing fuel importation and enhancing Nigeria’s refining capacity.
The ceremony included prayers for the project’s timely completion and acknowledgments of the support from local community leaders. Akintonde noted the significant efforts and time required to secure investment and necessary licenses, celebrating the commitment of three consortiums willing to invest $5 billion in the refinery project.
