The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed serious concerns about the planned nationwide protest, citing intelligence reports that suggest it could be exploited by violent elements. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, warned that there are indications the protest could lead to anarchy and violence, similar to recent unrest in Kenya.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Major General Buba highlighted the potential risks of the protest being hijacked by unscrupulous individuals aiming to create chaos. “There are strong indicators that unscrupulous elements plan to hijack the process, leading to anarchy,” he said, drawing parallels with the ongoing violent and unresolved situation in Kenya.
Buba emphasized the military’s commitment to preventing the country from descending into chaos. “Our duty as military is to ensure that while citizens have the right to peaceful protest, they do not have the right to mobilize for anarchy and unleash terror,” he stated.
He identified potential targets of violence, including individuals, places of worship, businesses, and markets. The general urged citizens to remain calm and allow the government to address the situation to restore national stability.
The DHQ’s stance underscores their readiness to act against any attempts to escalate the protest into violence, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order during this period.
