Ndueso Essien, a former minister and federal lawmaker, has advised the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to strategically position itself to challenge the All Progressive Congress (APC) and prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state.
Essien noted recent developments in the country and expressed concern about the possibility of Nigeria becoming a one-party state, which he believed was not conducive given the country’s diverse population and culture.
He emphasized the need for the PDP to develop new philosophies and policies, cautioning against underestimating the potential for new parties to rise to power in the future. Essien highlighted the emergence of a “third force” as a potential threat to established parties.
The PDP stalwart also urged the people of Akwa Ibom to allow Governor Umo Eno to focus on delivering his mandate rather than prematurely discussing a second term. He stressed that a second term should be earned through performance in office.
Essien criticized the alleged corruption and mismanagement of resources by political leaders, attributing it to the economic challenges facing the country. He questioned the continued presence of individuals above 70 years in positions of power, suggesting that younger leaders should take over for more effective governance.
In his view, compensatory political positions often lead to a lack of motivation and effectiveness in leadership. He advocated for a shift towards younger leadership to invigorate governance and address contemporary challenges.
