Mike Ejiofor, the former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), has called on the new leaders of both the DSS and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to work together effectively to tackle Nigeria’s security issues. In an interview with Arise TV, Ejiofor discussed the current state of the DSS and the challenges faced by the agency, which he attributes to broader social and economic factors impacting Nigeria.
Ejiofor acknowledged the DSS’s general professionalism but also recognized that the agency faces public criticism and internal challenges related to poverty and unemployment. He stressed the need for public support for the DSS and emphasized the importance of investing in technological advancements to enhance intelligence gathering.
Ejiofor praised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi from within the DSS to the position of Director-General. He believes this move will boost the morale of the agency’s personnel and support career development within the DSS. Ejiofor also highlighted Ajayi’s youth and his extensive experience, particularly in the Niger Delta region, as valuable assets for improving national security.
Regarding Mohammed Mohammed, the new Director-General of the NIA, Ejiofor valued his extensive background in external intelligence and his experience working in various conflict zones. Ejiofor expressed confidence that both Ajayi and Mohammed will collaborate effectively, utilizing their expertise to address security challenges through technological innovation and close coordination with the National Security Adviser.
In closing, Ejiofor expressed optimism about Ajayi’s leadership, noting his popularity and potential to introduce new, innovative ideas. He also underscored the importance of experienced officers supporting the new leadership to ensure their success in enhancing Nigeria’s security landscape.
