Bayer Leverkusen clinched their first-ever Bundesliga title with a resounding 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday, April 14, ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance. The win, coupled with their unbeaten streak of 43 games in all competitions, secured the championship with five games left in the season.
Florian Wirtz’s hat trick, along with goals from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka, propelled Leverkusen to victory. Despite his significant contribution to the team’s success, Boniface was humble in his assessment, stating on his official page, “I didn’t lead anybody ooo. We led ourselves.”
Boniface, who returned from a four-month injury layoff, opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 25th minute and provided an assist for Xhaka’s goal. His remarkable performance has seen him contribute 11 goals and 9 assists in just 18 games.
Reflecting on the historic win, Leverkusen’s coach Xabi Alonso expressed pride in the team’s achievement, stating, “This is a very special moment for the club. Winning the Bundesliga for the first time in 120 years is something very special. The players are top. I am very proud of everyone.”
