In anticipation of the forthcoming Governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states scheduled for September and November respectively, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in both states. This initiative aims to enable eligible voters to participate in the upcoming elections.
During the second regular quarterly consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed that the final list of candidates for the Edo State Governorship election has been published following the conclusion of party primaries. Campaigns by political parties commenced on April 24th, 2024, and will end on September 19th, 2024, in accordance with electoral laws.
In Edo State, where election preparations are in progress, INEC emphasized the importance of adhering to timelines for the upload of the list of polling and collation agents. The Commission urged political parties to ensure timely submission to facilitate the production and delivery of identity cards for polling and collation agents.
For Ondo State, where political parties recently concluded their primaries, INEC reminded them of the deadline for the nomination of candidates, which is May 20th, 2024. Parties have been given three weeks to prepare and submit the list of candidates to the Commission, with no extensions granted.
The CVR exercise in Edo and Ondo States will take place simultaneously from May 27th to June 5th, 2024, at Ward registration centers and State headquarters. INEC will deploy regular staff and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to manage the registration process, with a total of 397 walk-in registration centers across both states.
In addition to voter registration, INEC will also provide uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) for collection during the CVR exercise. The Commission urged eligible voters who have not collected their PVCs to seize the opportunity to do so.
With these preparations underway, INEC aims to ensure a smooth electoral process and encourage maximum participation from eligible voters in Edo and Ondo States.
