Kano’s police commissioner, Usaini Gumel, has issued a warning to those attempting to disrupt the peace in the city, emphasizing the police’s readiness to respond to any threats.
This comes amid heightened tensions following the state house of assembly’s decision to repeal the Emirate Council Law of 2019. The new law, which reinstates Muhammadu Sanusi as Emir, has sparked unrest. A federal high court has ordered the state government to halt enforcement of the new law until further hearings.
Protests have erupted, particularly after the dethroned Emir, Aminu Bayero, returned to the state. In response, the police have announced plans for increased patrols and house-to-house searches to maintain order.
Gumel stressed that the police would enforce the law rigorously, ensuring the city’s safety and upholding government decisions regarding chieftaincy affairs. Bayero, now residing in another palace in Nassarawa LGA, has met with state security heads to address the situation.
