It seems Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State is taking a proactive stance regarding the planned nationwide protest. He emphasized during a town hall meeting in Minna that the youths of Niger State will not participate in the upcoming protest scheduled from August 1 to 10, 2024. Governor Bago highlighted the peaceful nature of the state’s youths and urged against any involvement in activities that could disrupt peace and tranquility.
To address the economic challenges facing the state, Governor Bago announced the release of 50,000 metric tonnes of grains at a reduced price of 50% to alleviate food scarcity and economic hardship. He further pledged to slash food prices by 90% before the year ends, leveraging the state’s food reserves to support its citizens.
Additionally, Governor Bago expressed his support for local government autonomy and called for improvements in local governance to better serve communities, particularly in ensuring timely salary payments and effective service delivery.
The Emir of Bida and other traditional rulers echoed the governor’s sentiments, urging youths to refrain from participating in the protest and advocating for dialogue and peaceful resolution of issues. Similarly, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly encouraged youths to engage in state-sponsored programs aimed at empowering them economically and socially.
Overall, Governor Bago’s approach reflects a commitment to maintaining peace while addressing economic challenges through targeted interventions and community engagement in Niger State.
