In 2022, telecommunication users in Nigeria, including Nigerians, expended N3.33tn on services such as calls, data, and SMS, as revealed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This expenditure reflects the N3.33tn total revenue collected by telecom companies for that year, as mentioned in the NCC’s ‘2022 Subscriber/Network Data Annual Report.’
The report also highlighted a year-on-year growth of 13.86%, as active voice subscriptions climbed from 195,463,898 in 2021 to 222,571,568 by December 2022. The NCC attributed this growth to factors like customer loyalty, promotions, aggressive consumer outreach, and competitive product offerings across all networks.
This boost in active subscriptions positively influenced other telecom metrics, like teledensity, Internet penetration, and broadband penetration. Moreover, 2022 witnessed a notable rise in data usage, with a 46.77% increment, reaching 518,381.78TB by the year’s end, up from 353,118.89TB in 2021.
