The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, emphasized that the union is advocating for a living wage for Nigerian workers, not a starvation wage.
Ajaero made this statement during a meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), ministers, and NLC leadership in Abuja. The meeting was convened by the National Assembly to prevent a planned nationwide strike set to begin tomorrow.
The NLC had declared an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday, June 3rd, due to the federal government’s failure to conclude negotiations on a new national minimum wage and to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
To avert the strike, the National Assembly called for the meeting to reach a definitive agreement with labour leaders.
During the discussions, Ajaero stressed that the fight is for living wages for workers, not starvation wages. He pointed out that the workers they represent are the brothers and sisters of the lawmakers and ministers, highlighting the need for the government to work for the benefit of all Nigerians.
Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), also spoke, noting that the current situation in the country has been especially difficult for Nigerians over the past year. He added that this hardship has complicated the negotiations for a new minimum wage for workers.
