Renowned political economist and former presidential candidate, Professor Pat Utomi, has outlined plans for a new mega-political party aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Thursday, Utomi criticized the current political landscape, asserting that existing parties have failed to deliver effective governance.
Expressing disappointment with the status quo, Utomi described current political parties as undemocratic and ineffective in addressing the nation’s needs.
He outlined the formation of the new mega party, which will merge two distinct groups of politicians: the ‘mea culpa’ cohort, comprising former politicians who acknowledge past failures and are dedicated to national redemption, and the ‘new value’ cohort, consisting of forward-thinking individuals from diverse political backgrounds.
Utomi emphasized the involvement of elder statesmen in the initiative and stressed the importance of promoting a political movement grounded in value-driven citizenship, integrity, and respect for human dignity.
His schedule includes strategic meetings in Lagos and Abuja, followed by a press conference to officially announce the formation of the mega party. Utomi aims to make significant progress in these discussions before returning to the U.S.
This initiative follows Utomi’s previous dialogues with opposition party leaders and presidential candidates from the 2023 general elections, focusing on building a united front against the APC.
Utomi’s approach seeks to foster a new political culture distinct from the self-serving attitudes prevalent among current political figures.
