Four former coordinators from the dissolved Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council have accused Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu of discrimination within the power sector. In a statement jointly signed in Abuja by Abubakar Mohammed, Bridget Eyimo, Bukie Okangbe, and Sultan Abdulazeez, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains criticized the segmented approach to electricity consumption.
The group expressed concern over the categorization of electricity into bands, noting that it adversely affects small businesses and causes discomfort in many homes. They emphasized the central role of electricity in the economic well-being of Nigerians, particularly in the informal sector.
The statement read, “We appeal to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to stop the discrimination in the power sector. This sector is vital to the economic fortunes of many Nigerians, especially in the informal sector. We condemn the division of electricity into bands, which severely impacts many families. Consumers, especially those in ‘Band A,’ face significant difficulties in using power for small and medium-scale businesses.”
The group highlighted that the increased electricity tariff has led some in Band A to allocate over 70 percent of their production costs to electricity bills, driving up the prices of goods in the market. They urged the minister to end this discriminatory practice to alleviate the burden on Nigerians, warning that such policies could tarnish the administration’s image.
Despite their criticisms, the former campaign directors praised President Bola Tinubu for implementing reforms they believe will positively impact the nation’s economy in the long run. They also called on underperforming ministers and cabinet members to improve or face potential removal from office.
