Governor Douye Diri’s election has been upheld by the Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja. On Monday, a three-man panel led by Justice Adekunle Adeleye dismissed the petition filed by APC candidate Timipre Sylva and the party, citing a lack of merit.
The tribunal found that the petitioners failed to provide credible evidence to support their allegations against Diri’s re-election. The APC and Sylva had claimed various electoral irregularities, but the tribunal concluded that these claims were unsubstantiated. Justice Adeleye stated that the evidence presented was insufficient to prove malpractice or non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
Governor Diri expressed relief and gratitude, urging unity and calling on his opponents to work together for the state’s progress. Meanwhile, the APC and Sylva expressed disappointment, indicating that they might appeal the decision.
The November 2019 Bayelsa State governorship election had been contentious, with Douye Diri of the PDP declared the winner by INEC. The tribunal’s ruling is a significant step toward stability in Bayelsa State’s governance, although an appeal from the APC could prolong the final resolution. As legal processes continue, there is hope for peace and development in the state.
