An outbreak of violence occurred on Monday at the national secretariat of the Labour Party (LP) in Abuja, as a group of protesters, reportedly from the Edo State chapter, clashed with individuals suspected to be supporters of LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure.
The altercation began when the anti-Abure demonstrators arrived at the party’s headquarters, brandishing placards and voicing their demands for Abure’s removal. Tensions escalated rapidly as the protesters disembarked from their vehicles, prompting the alleged thugs to attack them with makeshift weapons, forcing some drivers to flee the scene.
Prompt intervention by law enforcement, including armed police officers and operatives from the Department of State Security (DSS), helped contain the situation. The security personnel intervened particularly when the violence spilled over towards the nearby Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, where journalists covering the incident were also targeted by the assailants.
The swift response from security forces prevented the situation from spiraling further out of control.
