Barcelona Women’s coach, Jonatan Giraldez, will be leaving his role at the end of the current season, as announced by the Catalan club. Giraldez, the Champions League-winning coach, has been at the helm since July 2021, leading the team to significant success, including winning the Champions League, two Spanish league titles, the Copa del Rey, and two Spanish Super Cups.
The 32-year-old coach had previously served as an assistant coach under his predecessor, Lluis Cortes, achieving notable success, including the Champions League, Copa del Rey, and league treble in the 2020-21 season. Despite a contract extension being practically sorted out, Giraldez has decided not to renew his contract, stating, “I want to leave them enough time to sort things out and find the best possible future.”
Barcelona Women currently holds a nine-point lead in Spain’s Liga F and sits at the top of their group in the Champions League. Giraldez expressed his gratitude and fondness for the club, hoping that the fondest memory of his time at Barcelona is yet to come in the remaining months of the season. The club acknowledged Giraldez’s decision for a change and emphasized their positive relationship with the coach.
