The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has issued a stern warning against age cheating at the National Youth Games (NYG), which are exclusively for athletes aged 15 and below.
Enoh stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Games by adhering to the age limit and urged participating states to embrace fair play and sportsmanship. He also called on spectators and fans to support the young athletes representing their states.
The minister officially opened the NYG on Thursday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State. In a statement released by his Special Adviser (Media), Diana-Mary Nsan, Enoh emphasized that the competition is intended solely for youth, stating, “Age cheating undermines the purpose of these Games, and we will take firm measures to prevent it.”
Delta State is hosting this year’s NYG, which is a significant event in Nigeria’s sports calendar. The Games provide young athletes with a platform to showcase their talents and are crucial for the nation’s talent identification and development strategy.
The opening ceremony is expected to be a grand affair, with numerous dignitaries and sports stakeholders in attendance to celebrate the future of Nigerian sports.
