Osasu Obayiuwana, a journalist, has raised serious concerns about the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) due to their inability to maintain accurate records of the number of matches played by national team players.
In a voice note shared on his Twitter page, Obayiuwana highlighted the NFF’s reliance on data provided by the players themselves, emphasizing that it is the federation’s responsibility to keep track of such information.
Surprisingly, Obayiuwana revealed an incident involving Asisat Oshoala, a prominent player in the Nigerian national women’s football team. An NFF official reportedly contacted Oshoala to inquire about the number of games she had played for Nigeria, indicating a lack of knowledge within the federation. Oshoala expressed her astonishment, as she believed that the NFF should have accurate records since it is their duty to maintain them.
The issue is further exemplified by the absence of Oshoala’s match data on platforms like Wikipedia, where her international appearances are not documented, and only her goals for the Super Falcons are listed as 29.
This is not the first instance in which the NFF has faced criticism regarding their mishandling of player data and statistics for national teams. The incident emphasizes the urgent need for the NFF to improve its record-keeping practices to ensure accurate and reliable information is available for players and the public.
Meanwhile, the Super Falcons are currently gearing up for the upcoming 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where Oshoala and her teammates will have the opportunity to increase their international appearances.
